As of 2015, the Venezuelan flag is yellow, blue and red in horizontal bands from top to bottom, with eight stars arranged in an arc in the middle and a coat of arms in the top left corner. Francisco de Miranda designed the original flag in 1806.
Later, seven stars were added to represent provinces that supported Venezuela's independence from colonial Spain. President Hugo Chavez introduced the latest version of the Venezuelan flag in 2006. As a tribute to the revolutionary Simon Bolivar, Chavez added one star representing the province of Guayana and also made minor changes to the coat of arms.
