Full Answer

The purpose of a concordance is to provide a Hebrew or Greek equivalent for every word used in the English Bible, and to provide a working definition of those Hebrew or Greek words. To accomplish this, concordances are split into the following parts and order: English words, Hebrew definitions and Greek definitions.

When you find a word in the English Bible for which you want an original language definition, look up the English word in the first part of the concordance. All words are listed alphabetically. Then find the specific verse in which the word is used. Beside that verse will be a number. If the verse is in the Old Testament, look up the number in the second part of the concordance to find the word's Hebrew definition. If the verse is in the New Testament, look up the number in the third part of the concordance to find the word's Greek definition. All numbers are listed in ascending order in the second and third parts of the concordance.
