In the United States alternating current, or AC, wins over direct current, or DC, as a source of electricity because it is more efficient; the voltage of the current is easy to manipulate. However, direct current is used for computers, batteries and LEDs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
Alternating current, developed by Nikola Tesla, has a current that reverses 60 times per second. This creates a larger amount of induction than a current flowing continuously in one direction. Power plants send AC power efficiently to buildings at a high voltage with little resistance. A transformer then lowers the voltage for safe use with everyday products.
