Most well tanks are bladder-style: they contain a rubber bladder that separates the air compartment from the water storage. Air leakage at the valve causes the pressure pump to compensate for the lost pressure by cycling more frequently. Increased cycling can damage the pump. Waterlogging occurs when the pressure tank fills up with more water than it should. For the pump to maintain optimal pressure, it has to cycle more. The extra cycles risk damaging the pump. Brittle or ruptured valves are the common causes of waterlogging.
