How True Are the Obama Divorce Rumors?

As of November 2015, rumors of an eminent divorce between Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are baseless. Rumors have been persistent since 2010, with the latest round attributed to gossip tabloid The National Enquirer.

The first claims of an imminent Obama divorce appeared in 2010 in a National Enquirer article stating that Michelle would divorce Barack if he ran for a second term.

In 2012’s “The Amateur: Barack Obama in the White House,” journalist Edward Klein claimed that Barack and Michelle considered divorce during a tough political campaign in 2000. In September of 2015, the National Enquirer claimed that the couple had fought and were seeking divorce because Barack had flirted with U.S. Ambassador Caroline Kennedy.

While it is difficult to prove or disprove what is happening in the couple’s private lives, attributions of strife between the couple come from undisclosed sources, and the couple has never made a public statement that they intend to divorce or that they are having marital difficulties.

In response to the 2012 rumors, Obama spokesperson Eric Schultz stated, “Ed Klein has a proven history of reckless fabrication in order to sell books. Nobody in their right mind would believe the nonsense in this one.”
