What Are Some Trees With Huge Leaves?
Some trees with huge leaves are the large-leaved cucumber tree, northern catalpa, banana tree and princesstree. The princesstree also has large leaves that grow up to 12 inches long and 8 inches wide, with trumpet-shaped flowers that are 2 1/2 inches long.
The large-leaved cucumber tree, or bigleaf magnolia, scientifically known as Magnolia macrophylla, has 30-inch oblong leaves and 10- to 12-inch flowers. Although the tree has large foliage, it only grows up 40 feet tall with a 40 foot spread. The tree thrives in the American Southeast, but doesn't often grow wild, as the shallow roots require rich, well-watered soil. The ashe magnolia or magnolia ashei, a slightly smaller version of the bigleaf magnolia, also boasts large leaves that grow 24 inches long and 12 inches wide.
The northern catalpa, or catalpa speciosa, has 12-inch long and 8-inch wide heart-shaped leaves. Along with its unique leaves, the tree also boasts a whimsical twisting trunk and fragrant, showy flowers. The white trumpet-shaped flowers blossom in the summer only after the tree is at least seven years old, and produce 20-inch long pods.
The banana tree has 9-foot long and 2-foot wide leaves or fronds. If grown in the right climate, the tree produces four leaves per month and a crop of bananas.
