As of 2014, the top five countries in terms of population are China, India, the United States, Indonesia, and Brazil, with both China and India having populations of more than 1 billion, as stated by Internet World Stats. While China has the highest population, it is predicted that India is likely to overtake it due to population growth rates.
China has a population of 1,355,692,576and has had the largest population count in the world for some time. Population size is expected to decrease in the future, however.
India's population is estimated at 1,236,344,631, but is expected to surpass China's by 2050, with a predicted population size of more than 1.5 billion.
The United States has more than 300 million people, and this is expected to rise to more than 400 million by 2050.
Indonesia has a population of more than 200 million, which is predicted to reach more than 300 million by 2050.
Brazil also has a population more than 200 million.
The next five countries with the highest populations are Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Russia and Japan.
Although these countries have the highest populations, they do not have the highest population growth. Countries such as Qatar, Uganda, Ethiopia, Mali, Liberia and Kenya, along with many developing economies, are growing at a much faster rate. That said, it is unlikely they will reach the same population levels as the largest countries.
