What Are Things That Fly in the Air?
Aircraft is the term for a machine of any type or size that flies through the air. Aircraft include gliders, hot air balloons, aerial drones and passenger jets.
The first working aircraft was probably the kite. In East Asia, kites are sometimes even used to carry humans. The Chinese also developed rotor blades and may have pioneered manned hot air balloons. Not until the 20th century, however, did technology make heavier-than-air flight possible. Starting with the Wright Brothers' one-man double-winged Wright Flyer, within only a century, aircraft technology encompassed supersonic jets and the space shuttle.
The largest aircraft is the Antonov AN-225 Mriya. With a length of around 300 feet and cargo capacity of over a half million pounds, this airplane has set 240 world records.
