There are nearly 100 different supermarkets in Florida, many privately owned and operated. Publix is by far the largest, with 819 locations throughout the state. Wal-Mart Supercenter holds down the second place position with 149 locations, and Albertsons has 93 stores in the Sunshine State. Popular organic grocer Whole Foods only has three locations although there are 45 Costcos to choose from for your bulk shopping needs. Compared to the national scale, Wal-Mart is the largest chain of supermarkets in America, with 3,016 stores, while Albertsons offers 2,400 stores. Dominating the market in Florida, however, Publix is the largest and fastest-growing employee-owned supermarket chain in the United States.
