The most common substitute for cream cheese is plain Greek yogurt. One part plain yogurt and one part ricotta cheese also works well in replacing cream cheese in recipes.
A mixture of 3/4 cups of tofu, 1/4 cup margarine and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice is also a good cream cheese alternative. Neufchatel cheese and soy cream cheese can also be used.
Cream cheese is a common ingredient used in a variety of desserts, including cheesecake. Softened cream cheese makes a delicious spread for bagels and nut- based breads.
Pureed cottage cheese is another substitute for cream cheese, and optimal results are achieved when it is strained.
