Spiritual gifts are personality traits or talents that the Christian faith deems special in its followers. The gifts fall into the categories of ministry, manifestation or motivation. Each category has a set of gifts that relate specifically to type of gift the person has.
Ministry gifts include those of someone who holds a position in the church. Such gifts include church building, prophesying, evangelizing, pastoring and teaching. The manifestation gifts include speaking in tongues, healing, offering words of wisdom, knowledge and discerning of spirits. Additionally, interpretation of the words spoken in tongues is also included in the manifestation gifts. If someone possesses the gift of discernment, he has the ability to tell if someone is lying, whether someone is truly prophesying or if what he is saying is satanic. Someone with the gift of discernment also has the ability to know what is good and what is evil. Another gift that falls under the manifestation category is the gift of performing miracles.
Motivational gifts include encouraging people, giving to people, teaching, showing mercy and leadership. Many Christians possess some overlapping spiritual gifts. For example, teaching is a part of the motivational gifts category, but it is also one of the gifts of ministry. Likewise, the gift of prophesy is included in all categories.
