As of 2014, Indy cars boast engines ranging from 550 to 700 horsepower, with the ability to reach speeds greater than 200 miles per hour. To encourage engine parity, the Indycar Rules Committee has established a V-6, 2.2-liter capacity limitation.
Despite less engine displacement than a Toyota Camry, this power is achieved by turbo-charging the engine to turn the crankshafts up to 12,000 rpm. The turbocharger boosts performance with an exhaust gas turbine that draws more air to the induction system, enabling engines to burn more fuel. The committee permits three turbo-charger sizes, which boost air induction pressure to 1.3, 1.4 or 1.55.
