How Often Should a Foley Catheter Be Changed?
Last Updated Mar 26, 2020 7:34:21 PM ET
Unless the catheter plugs, it is recommended that a Foley catheter be changed approximately every 2 to 4 weeks, as stated by Jackson Memorial Medical Center. If the catheter clogs up, it needs to be immediately changed, as a plugged catheter does not effectively drain urine.
Catheter users can check to see if their Foley catheter needs to be changed by examining the catheter for signs of grit. This is easily done by pinching the catheter between the fingers. A catheter with grit is in danger of plugging, and it should be replaced.
When removing the catheter, if resistance is felt, medical attention should be sought, as reported by The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.
