A Christian prayer of invocation includes a formal invitation to God asking for His presence in a worship meeting, thanksgiving and request for guidance. Believers recite these prayers at the beginning of a worship session in church, before a meal or at a Christian event.
Invocation prayers ask God to give a blessing and hear petitions lifted to Him in prayer. Christian leaders customize each invocation prayer to suit a specific occasion. The prayers may also be in the form of a certain scripture in the Bible, commonly the Lord's Prayer or a Psalm of David. Most Christian invocations mention Jesus specifically but may also refer to the Holy Spirit and God.
When said in a gathering of people from multiple faiths, the prayers do not include references to Jesus but include gratitude, or request for guidance and help in a more generic way so as to accommodate other faiths.
