The word science comes from the Latin word “scentia,” which means knowledge. It can, therefore, be defined as the concerted human effort to understand, or to better understand, the history of the natural world and how it operates, with visible physical evidence as the foundation of that understanding. According to Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, science is defined as the “knowledge attained through study or practice," or “knowledge covering general truths of general laws operation, especially as obtained and tested through scientific method, and concerned with physical world.”
Increased understanding of the world helps in identifying endangered animal and plant species and, therefore, protect them. Natural catastrophes, such as earthquakes, can be explained by science. Science also includes understanding the causes of climate change, the creation of new chemicals and the discovery of cures. Science enables man to describe, define, investigate and eventually try to comprehend the world in which he lives in and how it works.
Science is the basis for an innovative culture and is central to significant political decisions. Technology that has transformed the way of doing business has been made possible by science. For instance, without science, there would be no electricity, no mobile phones and no Internet. There would be no refrigerators to preserve food, no television, no computers and no cars. The world today is vastly different from what it was centuries ago because of science.Learn more about Psychology
