The way people get saved, from a Christian perspective, is to turn away from sin and follow Jesus Christ, trusting in his sacrificial death as the only payment God accepts for sinful behavior. Otherwise, people must pay their own sin debt by enduring God’s eternal judgment.
Scripture teaches that sin separates the entire human race from God, resulting in physical and spiritual death. People therefore need to be brought back from death, as explained by Dr. Charles Stanley, senior pastor of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
For this to occur, an exchange must take place where a person’s sins are paid for by Christ, and his righteousness is credited to that person. God then declares that person righteous and restores mutual fellowship, allowing the individual back into his holy presence, as in the beginning.
There is no condemnation for those trusting in Christ, because his actions put to death enmity with God. This is why Jesus said that no one comes to the Father except through him and why he defined eternal life as knowing God and knowing him.
Once forgiven of sin, people can be presented before God blameless and beyond reproach and adopted as children of God through Jesus Christ to spend eternity with God in heaven.
