While Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch, is generally considered a myth, many individuals and organizations continue to report what they believe are sightings of the alleged ape-like creature throughout North America. The majority of reports of sightings have occurred in the 20th and 21st centuries.
One of the earliest publicized reports of a sighting occurred in 1951 when Eric Shipton took a photo of what he believed was a Sasquatch footprint. Subsequent photos and even motion picture film depicting what many believe are Sasquatches are considered authentic proof by some and hoaxes by others. The Sasquatch Genome Project organization has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars collecting data it hopes to use to prove Bigfoot's existence.
