As of 2015, the total population of New York City is just over 8 million people, making it the most densely populated city in the United States. The state of New York has a total population of over 19 million people, 40 percent of whom live in New York City.
In 1898, the five boroughs of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island were joined together to form New York City. New York City features one of the largest natural harbors of the world and was a primary point of entry for immigrants into the United States. Because of this harbor, New York City became a diverse and populated city where as many as 800 different languages are spoken.
