Robert Hooke was an English scientist, mathematician and philosopher who lived between 1635 and 1703. He is known for a variety of accomplishments in the scientific world. Although he is known best for Hooke's Law, Robert Hooke is credited for a variety of other discoveries and accomplishments. As a physicist, he studied the vibrations in music notes. He also investigated the relationship between respiration and combustion and the laws of falling bodies.
Hooke worked with scientist Robert Boyle on constructing an air pump and incorporating the concept of the conical pendulum. His invention worked as a spring control to balance the wheel in watches, according to RobertHooke.com. He also studied astronomy and gave lectures on the discipline. He was the first to discuss Jupiter rotating on its own axis, and he also discovered the fifth star in the Orion Trapezium.
While at Gresham College, Hooke published Micrographia, based on his investigations of microscopy. Micrographia includes illustrations of very small living organisms, such as fleas and insects. Personally, Hooke is said to have lived a mostly solitary life. His father died while he was very young, leaving him an orphan. He and his wife did not have any children.
