Cooking fish can leave a bad smell hanging around your kitchen. Good Housekeeping has several tips for getting rid of the smell after cooking fish. You need some disinfectant spray, 1/2 cup of baking soda, some white vinegar and some ice to eliminate fishy odors.

  1. Clean up scraps of fish

Scraps of fish left in the garbage disposal can cause smells to spread throughout the kitchen. You can clean the blades of the garbage disposal unit by using it to grind up ice. You can also try putting half a cup of baking soda and plenty of warm water down the drain to clean the pipes.

  2. Take out the trash

Leaving scraps of fish in the trash causes the kitchen to smell. Take out the trash, and clean the garbage can using a disinfectant spray to get rid of food scraps and odor-causing bacteria.

  3. Use vinegar to neutralize cooking fumes

Mix 3 tablespoons of vinegar with 1 cup of water in a saucepan. Boil this mixture for several minutes. The acidic fumes that are produced neutralize the alkaline molecules that make up the fishy odor. Use this technique in the first minutes after cooking fish to get rid of the odor quickly.
