The best way to respond to a compliment is to offer a sincere and simple thanks. Even though some may think it sounds conceited to say it directly, it is important to remember that acknowledging the praise is polite and lets the person know his or her accolade is appreciated.
It is human nature to be embarrassed about receiving praise. Instead of acknowledging it, people tend to either deflect it or reject it. Responding to compliments in this manner devalues the praise and undermines and insults the giver.
Responding in a genuine and thankful manner to a compliment is the best course of action. The most important thing to remember is to be sincere, as anything else may be viewed as condescending.
- Give credit where credit is due
- Show some appreciation
- Give a boomerang compliment
If someone else was helpful in the task, be sure to mention them in the thanks. An example would be, "Thanks! Jennifer was really helpful in gathering all of the data for this project."
Let the person giving the compliment know how much it is appreciated. Say something like, "Thanks so much! That is so kind!"
A boomerang compliment is when the giver is complimented in return. One caveat, however, is to be sure the boomerang compliment is sincere, or it could fall into the category of deflection or rejection.
