Black or dark spots on the face and skin can be caused by a number of different conditions and can be treated using a variety of topical remedies. The actual treatments vary depending on the condition that is causing the dark spots, which is why it is recommended to see a dermatologist to understand what is behind the darkening skin.

In addition, the spots could also be a sign of a more serious problem, making it all the more important to have the condition examined by a doctor.

Dark spots can be caused by hyperpigmentation, which is the overproduction of melanin, through too much sun exposure or by a condition known as melasma, which often results from hormonal changes. Although the causes may be different, using topical exfoliants containing lactic or glycolic acid may help to scrape away the dark spots if they have just formed.

Citric acid, such as that found in lemons, is also thought to have a lightening effect on the skin, which is why some people recommend scrubbing the face with lemon juice daily to help eliminate the dark spots. There are also many other substances that may help to lessen the dark spots, such as honey, almond oil, buttermilk, tomato juice, rosehip oil, aloe vera and even onions.
