What Is Prosocial Modeling?

Prosocial modeling is a therapeutic intervention technique and behavior modification strategy used primarily in the criminal detention, probation and education fields. The purpose is to transform client behavior by demonstrating and reinforcing positive social behaviors such cooperating, sharing and helping others.

In the prosocial modeling approach, clients are encouraged to understand specific expectations for behavior. Then, they are acknowledged and rewarded for positive comments and actions that demonstrate empathy and respect for others. This is done by encouraging positive relationships and providing role models. While many people demonstrate these social skills at different times, the intervention technique requires consistent delivery and monitoring to be considered effective.
