Prayers intended for veterans include "A Prayer for Veterans Day," "A Veterans Prayer" and "Taps." These prayers emphasize thanking God for men and women that have completed their military service.
“A Prayer for Veterans Day” takes time to thank God for the lives of those that serve in the military, and specifically identifies former soldiers with the qualities of courage and sacrifice. This prayer emphasizes both the service of those who have long passed, as well as the service of those currently serving, and asks for assistance in providing veterans with greater love and gratitude.
“A Veteran’s Prayer” gives thanks for the men and women who serve, and reminds the reader that the struggle for freedom is never completed. The prayer goes on to ask for great blessings and abundance in exchange for the hard work and sacrifices made by those who have been in the military. It concludes with a reminder that because of these former soldiers, America has continuously prevailed over tyranny.
"Taps" is a classic prayer that calls to mind visions of a military service that has been well performed and is now concluded. There are symbolic allusions within the prayer that seem to state that death is near. Lines such as “God is nigh” seem to indicate that the soldier’s service has asked from him the greatest sacrifice: his life. This may be one reason for its recurring performance at military funerals.
