In the Hebrew Bible's first Book of Chronicles, Jabez prays that God bless him, enlarge his territory, let God's hand be with him and, depending on the translation, keep him from pain or from causing pain. "The Prayer of Jabez" is also a bestselling 2000 book by Bruce Wilkinson.
"The Prayer of Jabez: Breaking Through to the Blessed Life" has sold over 10 million copies. It includes a wording of the prayer in which Jabez asks God to spare him from pain, rather than from causing pain. Critics have accused the book of promoting a practice that goes against Jesus' caution against "vain repetition" in prayer and a lack of understanding of why God allows believers to suffer.
The fourth chapter of 1 Chronicles calls Jabez an honorable man, but he is mentioned only in the ninth and 10th verses of the chapter and nowhere else in the Bible.
