Bangkok has a population of just more than 7 million residents, which makes the capital by far the most populated city of Thailand and the 23rd-largest city in the world.
The city covers more than 600 square miles, giving it a density of just under 12,000 residents per square mile. The metropolitan area of Bangkok includes more than 14 million people. The city rests in the south central region of the country, near the Gulf of Thailand, and was once named the hottest city in the world by the World Meteorological Organization. The majority of residents are of Thai, Thai-Chinese or Malay ethnicity.
