According to Right Diagnosis from Health Grades, penicillin cures a host of illnesses, including acute rheumatic fever, syphilis, tonsillitis, gangrene and gonorrhea. Penicillin treats diseases by attacking protective cell walls around bacteria.

Right Diagnosis further notes that penicillin derives from penicillin molds, and it comes in different antibiotic forms. For instance, WebMD claims that penicillin V potassium is an oral antibiotic used to treat such ailments as strep throat, tonsillitis and trench mouth. It is also used to cure infections of the middle ear, nose, sinus and throat. Penicillin V potassium is also an effective deterrent against inflammation of the mouth and gums, and it heals certain skin conditions.

Right Diagnosis mentions another skin infection that penicillin cures, which is necrotizing fasciitis, otherwise known as flesh-eating bacteria. It is a disease that destroys the skin and underlying layers, and it can lead to gangrene. Although the disease is rare, it does have a higher mortality rate.

WebMD mentions another form of penicillin in the form of penicillin G procaine intramuscular, which treats many of the diseases that penicillin V potassium deals with, but it also cures bacterial infections caused by rat bites. It gets rid of certain sexually transmitted diseases, including syphilis that has been passed from mother to child. It also treats different stages of syphilis and syphilis that attacks the nervous system.
