Typical patterns for First Communion banners include a cross, a wine chalice or goblet, and a communion wafer or a loaf of bread as the focal points. In addition, the banner includes the name of the person having his First Communion.
Other common patterns appearing on the banners are grapes and wheat stalks. Some choose to add additional Christian-related symbols, such as hearts, doves or waves of water. The Greek letters Alpha and Omega, which represent the beginning and the end, or Chi Rho, which represent the first two letters of Christ, are occasionally added. Some parishes have specific banner size, symbol or color requirements.
