What Is the Normal Protein Level in Urine?
Last Updated Mar 25, 2020 9:38:20 AM ET
A normal urine protein level is 0 to 8 milligrams per deciliter for a random sample and less than 80 milligrams per 24 hours for a 24-hour urine collection, according to MedlinePlus. The protein urine test measures the amount of protein excreted in the urine.
The protein urine test is used to screen for kidney disease, explains MedlinePlus. It is normal to have small amounts of protein in the urine, but when the kidneys are damaged, urine protein levels increase. A slight increase in the amount of protein in the urine is usually nothing to be concerned about. A significant increase may be caused by kidney problems, dehydration, heart failure or a bladder infection.
