Some of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit are the gift of prophecy, the gift of faith, the gift of speaking in different kinds of tongues, and the gift of the interpretation of tongues. A list of the nine gifts appears in the Bible in 1 Corinthians 12.
Many people misinterpret the gift of prophecy to mean the ability to foretell the future. According to biblical scholars, the word used in the original texts actually means “to speak forth.” People who have the gift of prophecy are those who declare the will of God publicly and speak up when they witness sin in order to make people repent. Preachers and evangelists are examples of people who use the gift of prophecy.
The gift of faith is simply having exceptional confidence in the promises made by God and the ability to inspire others with this confidence.
The gift of tongues is the supernatural ability to speak a foreign language that the believer does not know or to speak in the "tongues of angels." According to the Bible, when a person is speaking in the tongues of angels, only God and the Holy Spirit know what she is saying.
The gift of interpreting tongues is the supernatural ability to understand a language without having first learned the language. There are several stories in the Bible in which people are given this gift in order to receive messages from God.
