Santa Claus is called "San Nioclás" or "Daidi na Nollag" in Ireland. The first name means "Saint Nicholas," and the latter translates literally as "Daddy Christmas" or "Father Christmas" in traditional Irish.

The name Santa Claus is found in parts of Ireland due to outside influences. Father Christmas in Ireland works differently than the traditional Santa in other part of the world. While other Santas leave gifts under the Christmas tree, Father Christmas leaves his gifts in the child's room, often in a pillowcase located at the edge of the bed. Some families hang Christmas socks or stockings instead of a pillowcase.
