What Do Monks Wear?

Monks wear robes, as dictated by the Lord Buddha. This has been a tradition among monks for thousands of years, and it can be traced back to more than 2,500 years ago.

The pattern of the robe worn by monks remains simple, even with the invention of modern clothing machinery. The robes are designed to make it easy to sew together patches of cloth or discarded rags. The robes worn by monks may vary in color, but only because of the different dyes used. Traditionally, vegetable dyes were used, but in more modern times, these robes are colored using chemical-based dyes.
