Do You Have to Memorize "The Lord's Prayer" in Catholic School?

Many Catholic grade schools require children to memorize "The Lord's Prayer" before their First Communion, such as Our Lady of Lourdes in Erath, Louisiana. "The Lord's Prayer" is one of the first prayers students learn in first grade.

Because Catholic students must take the Sacrament of Confession before receiving their First Communion, they must learn "The Lord's Prayer" even sooner. Often after a confession, the priest assigns a penance to the student in the form of reciting prayers. Some other common prayers included in penance include " The Sign of the Cross," "Glory Be," "Hail Mary" and "Act of Contrition."
