How Many Watts Does a Freezer Use?
Last Updated Apr 8, 2020 6:41:56 PM ET

A chest freezer uses an average of 200 watts per hour. Older standalone freezers use considerably more energy than newer models. The average cost per month is $14.60, with a yearly cost of approximately $175.
To determine the energy usage of any appliance, one must multiply the number of hours it is used by the number of watts it uses. The average cost per kilowatt hour is 10 cents. The cost per kilowatt hour is available on a monthly utility statement that reflects the local rate. To reduce the number of hours a freezer runs, or cycles on, a freezer must be kept in a cooler part of the house, like a basement.
