Chembakolli is made up of approximately 100 households scattered among the trees of a thickly forested valley, according to Action Aid. The village is one of several situated in the Nilgiri Hills of southern India, and it is one of about 200 similar villages in the Tamil Nadu state.
These villages are populated by the Adivasi tribe, most of whom are involved in farming rice, onions, tomatoes, peppers and oranges. The people are mostly subsistence farmers, but they do grow tea for commercial sale. The closest city with a train station to Chembakolli is Mysore, which is south of the Nilgiris district
