Three main types of Buddhas exist. They are the Samma Sambuddhas, the Pacceka Buddha and the Savaka or Arahant Buddha, each of whom embodies a specific type of Buddhahood.
The Samma Sambuddha is similar to Siddhattha Gotama, the historical Buddha, and is a person who reaches enlightenment. This person finds teachings that have long been left behind and teaches them to other people. This type of Buddha becomes enlightened on his or her own. The Pacceka Buddha also reaches enlightenment but does not provide wisdom for other people. The Savaka or Arahant Buddha does not attain enlightenment on his or her own but through another teacher, like a Samma Sambuddha. This person might teach other people but not necessarily.
