How Do You Look up the Serial Number for Your Savage Rifle?

Jun Wang/CC-BY-SA 2.0

The physical location of the serial number on a Savage rifle varies, but some are found on the bottom of the receiver. The best way to look up serial number information for a Savage rifle is to visit the gun manufacturer’s web site and select the Part Finder tab.

Not all Savage rifles have a serial number; many firearms made prior to 1968 were not given serial numbers. The Gun Control Act of 1968 was passed by Congress and required that all guns made in the United States be given serial numbers by the gun makers. Any Savage firearms constructed after 1968 should have a serial number, but many older model weapons may still prove difficult to look up. The gun manufacturer’s web site does not contain serial information for any guns created prior to 1995. There is a special list created by the National Rifle Association that lists all weapons made by any well-known gun maker in the United States, which includes Savage rifles and begins in 1912. Other web sites may contain additional or more complete serial number records for older Savage rifles.

Savage guns were first designed by Arthur Savage in 1894, when the gun-maker formed the Savage Arms Company in his hometown of Utica, NY. Arthur Savage was the first to invent the “hammerless” rifle.
