How Long Does It Take to Replace a Green Card?
Last Updated Apr 15, 2020 7:29:18 AM ET
After finishing the application for a replacement green card, it typically takes approximately two to six months to arrive in the mail. The time frame varies by case.
The form used to file for a replacement green card is USCIS Form I-90, and there is a $365 fee for filing the form, as of 2014. A biometrics appointment is required after filing the I-90. A local immigration field office can place an I-551 stamp on a passport, which acts as temporary proof of U.S. residency while waiting for a green card. If a green card is lost outside the United States, the traveler must visit the nearest U.S. Embassy and Consulate instead of filing the I-90.
