How Long Do You Cook Trout in an Oven?

The amount of time needed to cook trout in the oven depends on the size and cut of the fish and the temperature of the oven. Whole trout takes 25 to 30 minutes to cook at 475 degrees Fahrenheit. Fillets typically take 10 to 12 minutes at 450 F or 20 to 25 minutes at 350 F. When the trout is done, the flesh should be opaque and flaky.

Once the trout is fully cooked in the oven, the skin and flesh tend to separate from the bones for easy serving. Prepare whole trout for baking by rinsing with cool water and patting it dry. Season the cavities and exterior of the fish with salt and pepper, then place the fish on a baking-sheet-lined baking tray, then put the tray on the baking rack. Place trout fillets in a greased baking dish or on a baking tray lined with foil. If the fillet has skin, place it skin-side down. Some recipes recommend adding lemon juice or white wine.

Trout, which belongs to the salmon family, has an earthy flavor that pairs well with strong flavorings such as bacon, wine, garlic and lemon and herbs such as tarragon, parsley and dill.
