How Long Does Beer Take to Freeze?
Last Updated Apr 17, 2020 7:31:22 PM ET

The amount of time that it takes beer to freeze is determined by the beer's alcohol content and the temperature of the freezer. Beer typically freezes when it reaches 13 degrees Fahrenheit. This happens because beer is a low proof beverage, while alcohols like whiskey and gin are higher proof.
Alcohol has a much lower freezing point than water. Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, while ethanol alcohol freezes at -173.2 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezing point of any alcoholic beverage falls between these two temperatures based on the alcohol per volume or proof. An alcohol's proof is determined by the ratio of its ingredients, which include a mixture of ethanol alcohol, water, sugar and other additives.
