One should bake meatballs at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 to 25 minutes. However, the time needed to bake meatballs depends on their size, the oven temperature and the recipe. Meatballs larger than 1.5 inches require longer baking times than smaller meatballs. Choosing an oven temperature is mostly a matter of personal preference rather than one of necessity.
There are several baking standards for meatballs. Various times and temperatures include 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes, 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes and 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes. Using the hottest temperatures means the meatballs cook more quickly, but they might be slightly less tender. Lower temperatures take longer but cook the meat more slowly so that the meat retains more of the fats and juices. Very small meatballs may be fully cooked in as little as 10 minutes, while large meatballs may take as long as 45 minutes. The most important thing to keep in mind when baking meatballs is that they should register 165 degrees Fahrenheit in the center when done. Use a small meat thermometer to check the temperature. Alternately, cut one meatball in half to ensure that it is no longer pink inside. Bake meatballs uncovered for the best results.
