What Kind of Clothing Do People Wear in Iran?

The most common items of clothing are a head scarf called a "roo-sari", and a coat called a "roo-poosh". The clothing that people in Iran wear is largely influenced by the religious leanings of the country. Iran is predominantly Islamic, and the clothing reflects that in its simplicity and modesty.

Unlike many countries, most citizens of Iran dress similarly. Whether rich or poor, citizens tend to follow strict dress codes. Western-style clothing is acceptable in private, but in public women are required to cover everything but their face, hands and feet. Men, on the other hand, tend to wear plain cloaks, coats, and pants. Short-sleeved shirts are acceptable, but shorts or quarter-length pants are only worn on beaches.
