Some remedies for killing lice are over-the-counter medicated shampoos, called pediculicides, olive oil, Spinosad (a prescription lotion) and Permethrin lotion. Olive oil suffocates lice, and subsequently kills them, according to Women's Day. Over-the-counter and prescription treatments also provide instant relief to the scalp.
Lice are parasites, small in size, that infect the scalp by causing red, itchy bumps. They are extremely easy to pass from one person to another. The infected individual, as well as others in their household, need to be treated due to their contagious nature. The home of the infected individual also needs to be cleaned. It is beneficial to clean "floor and furniture, particularly where the infected person sat or lay," the CDC reports.
