An IQ age chart is a tool used primarily by educators to determine the mental age and appropriate grade level of an individual student. This determination is based on the student's IQ score in relation to her actual chronological age.
For example, a child of 10 with an IQ of 60 would be considered to be operating at the cognitive level of a 5-year-old, and at the academic level of a kindergartner. A child of the same age with an IQ of 170 would be considered the equivalent of a 17-year-old high school senior. This measurement is considered to be merely a guideline for determining appropriate placement as there are many factors it does not take into account, such as social factors or individual school curricula.
