How Do You Install a Honeywell Thermostat for the Home?

To install a Honeywell thermostat, remove the old thermostat, label the wires, and install the new thermostat by matching the wires up to the device. While there are different models of Honeywell thermostats, the basic installation procedure remains the same, and overall, installing the thermostat is a fairly easy task which should only take a homeowner a couple of hours. Be aware that if the thermostat has five wires, rather than the usual four, it may be necessary to install an extra wire.

  1. Remove the old thermostat
  2. Use a screwdriver to pry the old thermostat off the wall. Take note of the terminals that the wires are attached to. The most common configuration for thermostat wiring is:

  • Green – fan wire
  • Red – 24 VAC/Rc and R or Rh wires
  • Yellow – compressor or air conditioner
  • White – heat

If the color of the wires do not match, simply tag them with a piece of tape according to the terminal to which they were attached.

  • Install the new thermostat
  • Remove the new thermostat from the packaging and inspect it to determine the number of wires it has, four or five. If an additional wire needs to be installed, the homeowner should retain the services of a professional. Match the wires to the terminals on the thermostat and secure it to the wall. Test to ensure it works properly.
