In the United States, Sweet and Low artificial sweetener is composed of nutritive dextrose, saccharine, cream of tartar, and calcium silicate. The saccharine provides its sweetness.
Dextrose is a carbohydrate derived from corn that is used to dilute the very sweet saccharine. Calcium silicate is an anti-caking agent used to keep the sweetener powdery. Sweet and Low is kosher, and contains no gluten, aspartame, sodium or phenylalanine. It is safe for diabetics, phenylketonurics and people with celiac disease. Sweet and Low granulated sugar has 0.9 grams of carbohydrates per 1 gram packet, but liquid Sweet and Low contains no carbohydrates, reports RDI Marketing.
