There are 18 ingredients listed for Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, including cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium chloride, sodium trideceth sulfate, glycerin and citric acid. The first ingredient in the shampoo is water, and it also contains the dyes Yellow 6 and Yellow 10.
Johnson’s changed the formula for its baby shampoo and about 100 other baby products in early 2014, according to an article in the New York Times. Due in large part to immense community pressure, Johnson & Johnson decided to remove two chemicals from these products, formaldehyde and 1,4-dioxane, that had been showed to be harmful to the environment. However, these two chemicals were not actually on the ingredients list, as they are byproducts produced by other ingredients during the manufacturing process.
Formaldehyde, which has been identified as a carcinogen by various government scientists, was slowly released over time by the ingredient quaternine-15, which was one of the ingredients removed from the shampoo. The chemical 1,4-dioxane, which has also been linked to cancer in various studies, was produced during a process used to make the other ingredients milder. Although the shampoo still contains trace amounts of this chemical, the company states that the levels are low enough to be entirely safe.
