Community service ideas are as diverse as the various organizations that make a difference in those places; ideas range from making holiday cards for senior citizens in nursing homes to organizing a charity walk to raise money. Nearly all ideas are helpful when it comes to community service.
People perform community service projects for a number of reasons. Young men wanting to attain the rank of Eagle Scout have to complete a service project, and oftentimes people build up community service hours in order to improve the quality of their college applications.
Some other ideas for community service include going around the neighborhood to collect food for a local food pantry; planting trees to beautify your community; collecting books, stuffed animals and DVDs to give to shelters or local hospitals. This last project often helps children deal with traumatic situations by having something comforting or entertaining to take their mind off their troubles.
If public safety is important, a helpful community service project involves making materials for friends and neighbors to ensure that they know what to do in case of fire or other disasters. If sanitation is a challenge, organizing a neighborhood "clean up" day can transform a community.
