Supplements such as magnesium, coenzyme Q10, riboflavin, feverfew and butterbur may also be effective, according to the Migraine Trust.

Migraine headaches are caused by the enlargement of blood vessels in the brain and the release of chemicals from tissue surrounding these vessels, according to Medical News Today. The release of these chemicals can cause inflammation, which can also increase pain. A common household spice is cayenne pepper, and the capsaicin in it has been known to work as an effective anti-inflammatory, according to Reader’s Digest.

WebMD suggests aromatherapy with essential oils, either through inhaling the aromas or by rubbing small amounts of the oils on the temples during a migraine headache. People who are suffering from migraines related to neck and back tension may find that massage in the neck and back area help the tension.

A bit of rest and relaxation can sometimes relieve the pain. Migraine sufferers can try taking a quick nap, going for a walk, lying down or sitting in a room with low lighting for a few minutes.

Some supplements have proven effective in managing persistent migraines. For example, some migraines may stem from magnesium deficiency, so taking magnesium supplements may help treat the problem.
