Hardware theft and vandalism are common crimes that occur often throughout the world. While acts of vandalism usually include nonviolent acts, such as graffiti and crop circles, hardware theft is rising as high-value electronic devices become commonplace. Hardware thieves are likely to target laptops and small electronic devices.
FBI reports state that the amount of loss associated with laptop theft totalled over $3.5 million in 2005. Furthermore, a study by Intel in 2010 involving 329 organizations found that 7.1 percent of employee laptops are either stolen or lost before the end of their usability. It is recommended that travelers carrying laptops and electronics keep a close eye on their belongings to avoid hardware theft.
